A Home Rooted in Stone

Ancient Surfaces gave this villa its architecture in reclaimed limestone. Weathered antique columns carry the arcade along the garden front, their capitals softened by age and their shafts still marked by the tools that first cut them. The same stone frames the entrance, where twin limestone columns stand beneath a deep timber canopy and worn steps lead in through carved doors. Inside, massive reclaimed blocks frame the tall arched openings of the main hall, giving new plasterwork the weight of a building that has stood for generations. Upstairs the gallery is lined with hand hewn columns set against dark beams and an iron balustrade, so the stone reads as one continuous structure from the lawn to the top floor. Warm cream and silvery grey run through the blocks, and each room takes the light a little differently because of it.
